What’s in a name?

Blog names are very interesting things. Some of them are funny, some of them are cute, some are witty. Some are actual names, some are inspired by people, some by personalities and hobbies, some by favourite songs/books/movies, others by brilliant strokes of imagination. In most cases, the blog name becomes synonymous with the blogger. An unknown person on the ‘net, known to everyone who reads his/her blog by a random, seemingly meaningless word (or words). Yet, almost every blogger I know has a story/reason behind his/her blog name. Except me.

I’ve been blogging for more than a year now, but I don’t really know how ‘Clueless’ came about. Only the other day, when Macho Girl and I were having our routine afternoon chat on Messenger, and she asked me why exactly I chose to name my blog ‘Clueless’, did I realize that I had absolutely no idea how I picked a name that would become my identity in the blogger world. ‘Clueless’ was my first and only choice when Blogspot asked me to name my blog, but it happened so quickly, I never gave a second thought to it.

Not many people have asked me the story behind ‘Clueless’ to date, so I’ve had a pretty easy time. But it sucks to go around telling the people who do ask, that I have no idea how I came up with it. So I decided to ‘make up’ a story, with my ever-faithful Macho Girl’s help. We ended up with a whole load of explanations for ‘Clueless’, though. For example:

1. Clueless, the movie – The first thought I had as soon as I’d decided to name my blog ‘Clueless’, was that people would think it was inspired by the similarly-named movie. A movie in which Alicia Silverstone portrayed a ditzy blonde who ‘jammed’ with her equally ditzy (albeit not blond) friends. And that was a terrifying thought. Because firstly, it would mean acknowledging that I’d seen the movie. Ack. Secondly, it would seem like I identified with the lead character, Cher, a complete air-head (at least till the end of the movie) who lives in her own bubble-wrap world with her plastic doll friends. And whatever I might be, I am NOT a Cher. Still, I liked the name ‘Clueless’ so much that I willed myself to believe that nobody in their right minds would’ve seen the movie (and admitted to watching it) and therefore nobody (in their right minds) would make the connection. And to my complete relief, nobody did. Phew.

Reason for non-applicability: The further I am from being associated with this movie, the better.

2. Philosophical Explanation #1 – [calm, soothing sadhu voice] ‘Clueless’ is appropriate for a blog name because after all, aren’t we all ‘clueless’, small, insignificant beings wandering around in this big, wide world, trying to find the meaning of life? Aren’t we all ‘clueless’ about why we’ve been put here and what our purpose in life is? Aren’t we all just trying to find answers?

Reason for non-applicability: Profound thoughts? Me? Bwah! *insert snorty, derisive laughter here*

3. Philosophical Explanation #2 – [same calm, soothing voice] ‘Clueless’ makes perfect sense because when I started blogging, I was this ‘clueless’ child trying to find my way in life. I was lost and confused (and, of course, ‘clueless’ about the world) and I turned to this blog hoping for some answers. Hoping for something to light my way from cluelessness to…well, clue-ness. Clue-ity. Whatever.

Reason for non-applicability: Same as reason for PE#1. Also, I don’t think ‘clue-ness’ or ‘clue-ity’ are words. Plus, I was never lost or confused as a child; I was quite bright, for that matter. I can’t lie now, can I?

4. A Warning – By telling everyone beforehand that I’m ‘Clueless’, I can warn the newcomers to the blog about it’s weird and often meaningless content. Because really, how much sense can you expect a ‘clueless’ person to make?

Reason for non-applicability: Oh, who am I kidding? I would never drive away a reader by ‘warning’ them of meaningless content on my blog. More publicity is good publicity, right?

5. Le Truth – I started blogging because I was extremely bored during my vacations, and since after a lot of thinking I was still ‘clueless’ about what to name my blog, I decided to name it just that. Clueless. And in time, the name grew to fit me.

Reason for non-applicability: None, except that it’s the most uninteresting ‘story’ behind a name ever. EVER. Sigh.

So what do you think? The next time someone asks me how ‘Clueless’ came about, what should I say? Should I go for the cold, bitter, uninteresting truth, or should I just not give a damn about my ‘reasons for non-applicability’ and spice the story up a bit?

While I’m at it, I might as well ask – do you have any interesting ‘explanations’ for ‘Clueless’? Any…pearls of wisdom? 😉

After four years of being with you, now "clueless" makes sense in a different light 🙂 More along the lines of, I guess, being clueless about where to turn in Orchard or how to get to some place in Singapore without MG!! 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 (yeah, i am revising your blog and posting comments on your old posts now and then… but no pressure! Dont have to write anything right now, i know u r busy 🙂 )

#The Girl,Hola! Not seen you around these parts for some time now! :D’Clueless’ is based on ‘Emma’? :O Ok, I’ve not read the book yet, but I know better than to think the movie was anything remotely resembling a good adaptation. :|And don’t worry, I’m in a dumb mood most of the time. Have you read my posts, girl? 😛 Oh, and I loooove long sentences (and commas, apparently), so you don’t have to worry about that the next time you comment over here! 😀

Hahaha, I had wondered about your blog name once or twice and at first (mind you, only at first..so, please don’t kill me) had presumed that you might have named it after that bimbotic movie…but then, after reading the blog, I decided otherwise. 😛 Oh, by the way, did you know that ‘Clueless’ is supposed to be “loosely based” on Jane Austen’s ‘Emma’? Hahahaha, Jane Austen might be tossing and turning in her grave over this outrageous insult to her classic. And I think the next time someone asks you about the story behind your blog name, you can confuse the person by saying, “I’m clueless about how ‘Clueless’ came to be.”. Alright, I’m in a dumb mood today. :PPS: Were my sentences too long? Gah!! Okay, okay, I’m in an absolutely dumb mood today. 😛

#Soleil,You know, that’s a wonderful idea! I don’t know why it never occurred to me! :P#Macho Girl,Yeah, but you would’ve had to watch the movie to actually be able to compare me and the air-head lead. But you didn’t, right? So all’s well in the world! Yay! :D#Confused Soul,HAHAHAHAHAHA! OMG!! I completely forgot about that! I laughed so hard when I read your comment that my mum came over to ask me what was wrong! Hee! Yeah, I guess if you look at it that way, I am quite clueless! :D#Viv,It does, doesn’t it? But well, one doesn’t want to remain clueless for life, so maybe once I’m done with the blog forever, I can say that I’ve moved on from my clueless phase of life. :)#Sayesha,You and Viv helped in deciding the URL! Actually, I think you guys suggested it, and I, not being able to think of anything better at that point of time, said ok. You guys didn’t have anything to do with ‘Clueless’! (Did you? My memory sucks :P)

Hey, where’s my due credit? I think I had a hand in deciding the blog URL? 😛

I agree with soleil… ‘I like it’ is the right explanation… and on top of that (for the philosophers), it is very apt in that it applies to everybody at some stage in life.

  7. Confused Soul July 28, 2006 / 12:25 am

Well, I think macho girl, clueless and confused soul describe each of us perfectly! The very athletic macho girl, the fickle-minded and ever confused confused soul and clueless.. well, I think at times [just at times.. not always..I know u are a bright child..*grins*] u are pretty clueless about where ur brain is..[*lol*] coz when I asked u to buy me vanilla rolls, u actually asked me, “Which flavour do u want, strawberry??” 😛

  8. Macho Girl July 26, 2006 / 5:34 pm

I always loved the name clueless!!! too bad it wasn’t exactly a stroke of brilliance :P//nobody (in their right minds) would make the connection. And to my complete relief, nobody did. Phew. hey! I made a connection! they’ve been showing teasers for the movie clueless on HBO, only after watching those things i began to wonder if u named ur blog after that movie! Honest! thats y i asked u in the first place!//Plus, I was never lost or confused as a child; I was quite bright, for that matter. I can’t lie now, can I?*raises eyebrow and gives a knowing smile (or smirk! whichever u prefer!)*

Dudette! You think too much about what to tell people haha. From reading all that I have come to one conclusion, that you like the name “Clueless”. So next time someone asks why you’re called Clueless, why don’t you just tell them, “Because I like it!” 😉
